Forced into prostitution by the rise of the prohibition, Kitty Monroe finds herself unable to leave her job at the dingy, run down bar La’ Rue’s, tethered to her pimp by the affair they’re having and the life of leisure he promises her, Kitty is stuck in a spiral of nihilism, as she tries to regain her sense of self we follow Kitty on her path to getting her life back. 

Synopsis:

In the beautiful, vibrant French Quarter of New Orleans, a burdened prostitute Kitty Monroe, spends her evenings performing in an illegal speakeasy, questioning the way her life is going. But at what cost?

The mundanity of her small world comes to a crescendo one evening, her performance is suddenly interrupted by rioting protesters known as the dries. 

Stripped of her dignity and now her livelihood, she sits at rock bottom, restrained in handcuffs being interrogated by a bigoted detective, she finally reveals her story. Not only to us, but to herself. She guides us through the journey of her life up till now, a story shrouded in sadness, prostitution and manipulation. 

With the details of her past now out in the open, carrying a hope she hadn’t felt in a long time, Kitty feels a weight off of her chest, a quiet release that settles through her like the first calm after a long storm. She exits the police station feeling transformed, no longer the misfortunate, tarnished  soul who she was just hours prior.

Set in a low lit speakeasy thick with smoke, humming with jaz, drinks overflowing and the thrill of Illegality. La Rue’s explores tragedy, manipulation and the price of being a woman during an economic devastation.
